Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes Scholarship Program The Queen of the Lakes Scholarship Program is a week-long candidate program for women ages 18-22 that is held in Minneapolis in conjunction with the Minneapolis' annual festival: The Aquatennial. The annual festival also known as "The Best Days of Summer" is typically held the third week in July. Each year approximately 50 candidates, who are ambassadors from their community or festival, go through a rigorous judging process to become the Queen of the Lakes or one of the two Aquatennial Princesses. The candidates are judged during the candidate program on a variety of criterion including their poise, professionalism, public speaking ability, current and future goals, education and co-curricular/extra curricular activities. As an ambassador, the Queen of the Lakes or Aquatennial Princesses travel throughout the state and region representing the city of Minneapolis. The Queen of the Lakes has historically visited other festivals throughout the U.S. and the world and is known as one of the most traveled queens in the United States. At the end of their year of service as an ambassador of the festival, the Queen and Princesses receive educational scholarships.
