2021 Aquatennial Recap

Did you miss Aquatennial Week this year? If so, here is a quick recap of the Visiting Dignitaries, Candidate, and Ambassador Program.

Visiting Dignitaries Program

Small Group, big FUN!

This year our Visiting Dignitary delegation was smaller, because of the impact of Covid-19. Many of our festival families were not able to join us, but for the St. Paul Winter Carnival and South Dakota Snow Queen much fun was had!

Whether it was Meet the Candidates at the McNamara Center, bowling and games at Punchbowl Social, Skyline Mini-Golf at the Walker, cruising Lake Minnetonka via the Power Boat Squadron, or jamming out in the hospitality suite, our V-Digs were the most awesome guests this year! Gracious, flexible, and outgoing – they made this year’s Aquatennial Celebration fantastic!

Candidate Program

43 women from across Minnesota joined the AAO for our 2021 Candidate Week. The candidates met with Coconut Whisk Co-Founder Bella Lam, volunteered with Bag of Smiles to create tie-blankets for patients with childhood cancer, participated in the Torchlight Parade, Attended Yoga with Aquatennial Alumni-Laura Swartz, and so MUCH MORE!

We thank the 43 communities and their candidates that chose to spend a week with us celebrating the Best Days of Summer!

Ambassador Program

Of the 43 participants of Candidate Week, Ariana Velishek from the community of Jordan and Hannah Rodgers from the community of Red Wing were selected as Aquatennial Princesses. They are joined by Queen of the Lakes Erika Tillmann from the community of Hutchinson. The team is completed by our Aquatennial "Caps" led by Commodore Brent LaSalle. He is joined by Captain Paulette Christopher and Captain Judy Holmquist.

You can learn more about each member of the crew here!

Finally, we bid farewell to our 2021 Aquatennial Ambassadors and we thank them for their service! How truly special it was to have a wonderful team serve the AAO. Finally, please join us in congratulating Aquatennial President Bob Orthey on the completion of his 2-year term as president.

NEW AAO President

Rich Westlund is the newly appointed Aquatennial President. Rich is the father of 2020 & 2021 Aquatennial Princess Erin Westlund and comes to the AAO with many years of festival world planning & leadership. Please give a warm welcome to Rich Westlund!
