Aquatennial - Showcasing the Water

Starting in 1940, the Aquatennial has always encouraged and showcased Minnesota's pride in our lakes, and many of the 13 lakes in Minneapolis.

The lakes of Minneapolis make us- The City of Lakes.

Starting in 1940 with the 1st Aquatennial, fun in the water has been a showcase of excitement and creativity. From Races, to boat crafting, synchronized swimming and diving, to comedy shows in the water, water is the centerpiece. The candidates and alumni even get to spend some time out on the lake.

Some of the events over the year have come and gone, but here are some of the standouts...

The Aquatennial Canoe Derby

For many years teams of two would race down the Mississippi up to 450 miles. The goal was to arrive in time for the 1st day of the Aquatennial. The last Derby was during the 60's, but people still remember the excitement it brought to opening day.

Twin Cities River Rats - Water Ski Spectacular

This water-show each year is a great showplace for the great Minneapolis Water Ski team.

Power Boat Squadron-

Partners with the AAO, the Power Boat Squadron provides some relaxing time on the water during the stressful week for the candidates.

Power Boat Races

Part of the Water Sports Race Series, these were the only Grand Prix in the upper mid-west.

The Aqua Follies, and Water Ballet

The Aqua Follies showcased the talented synchronized swimming squad, as well as Olympic caliber swimmers and divers each Aquatennial. In Wirth Park they had a large grandstand that would fill up for over 20 years. The performers would participate in front of the large crowds right in the lake. The divers would even sometimes be a slapstick comedy show for the crowd.

The Aquatennial Boat Parade-

Milk Carton Boat Races

A favorite of all, the Milk Carton Boat Races provide memories that everyone remembers. The creativity in design, and style is only half the fun. Does the boat float, is the best part of each ship that sets sail.

Sand Castles

Talented sand artists from around Minneapolis share their amazing skills for all. Children of all ages walk through the art to admire the outstanding displays.
